Factors that cause Dull Skin

Numerous factors can contribute to dull skin. They can be biological/ genetic, immediate, physical, or temporary. Let’s understand each one in detail.

Biological/ Genetic factors :

There are different skin types namely oily, normal, and sensitive. Each skin type has a different level of sebum production.

Without proper exfoliation and cleansing, these agents might adhere to the skin making it appear dull.

Dry skin types are more prone to dull skin because they have flaky and dry skin.

Immediate factor:

Dull skin can also be a result of a lot of immediate factors like air pollution, humid living conditions, smoke and soot.

The article 16 ways smoking may affect skin and how to prevent claims that smoking can cause dull skin as the smoke releases nicotine which can readily be absorbed by the skin.

Stress can be another factor. Stress can cause some glands like the Hypothalamus, Pituitary, and Adrenal to produce hormones such as Cortisol and others which get into the bloodstream and cause hyper-inflammation.

Also this results in dull, flaky, and acne-prone skin.

Physical factors:

As we all know, 60% of the human body is made up of water. Dull skin can be the leading result of a dehydrated body. Also, excessive consumption of sugar can add to the problem.

UV rays are another source of dull skin. These rays cause dull skin as well as speed up the aging process.

Temporary factors:

Sleeping with makeup on is a very common mistake. The makeup blocks the skin’s pores, not letting them breathe. The skin too absorbs some of it and all this build-up causes dull skin.
